Even companies that pay for the development of step by step manuals
often sell that product separately from the software.  Witness the Adobe
Classroom-in-a-book series, and various Microsoft books.

Once upon a time more products included full manuals comparable to
aftermarket books.  This changed more for economic than other reasons, I
think.

market software that will never attract aftermarket writers
