I have a personal suspicion about why so many corporate networks based
on Microsoft technology behave so poorly from the average user's
point-of-view. I think it's because many corporate IT departments don't
really understand two things: they don't understand how people in their
organisation actually use IT in their work (and this is especially true
when it comes to understanding "power users" like tech writers whose
work is not easy to classify), and they don't understand just how
powerful Microsoft Active Directory (AD) actually is. You can use AD to
restrict access to resources to specific groups of users, but if you
don't understand which users legitimately need to access what, you are
preventing rather than enabling the use of information resources, and
everyone suffers.
