In a previous career, I was deeply involved in the profession of
records management...off-site business record storage, microfilming
and scannmg business records, etc...Iron Mountain kind of stuff,
though not with IM.
They had a professional organization called ARMA...Association for
Records Management and Administration...similar in size to our STC.
The formed a separate and independant organization called
ICRM...Institute for Certified Records Management and bestowed a
certification called CRM...Certified Records Manager.
it worked well, it was respected and it was tough to get. It didn't
stop thousands of other records managers from getting jobs...but for
companies such as the biggest law firms, accounting firms, hospitals,
where millions of files are managed, they wanted to know that you had
the width and depth of knowledge that they would need not for day to
day, but in times of emergency...litigation, audit, etc.
I've seen certification work...I've also seen certification fail. Why
can't we all be trying to have this work?
