Unfortunately, I have been in offices that had very poor air
quality--which I always thought was one reason it was difficult to
concentrate in them. Turns out I may well have been right...and there is
something we can do about it.
This might especially be a good idea for those who freelance or
telecommute, since the air quality of many homes is even worse than that
of most offices.
This Jetson Green article includes a brief TED talk, introducing three
common house plants highlighted by extensive NASA research that when
combined in a home can both convert CO2 to oxygen during day and night,
a swell as clear the air of volatile organics such as formaldehyde. The
gentleman giving the talk began to experiment with this fifteen years
ago, and now there is a well documented office building in Delhi using
these to provide clean air for the occupants. Among other things, he
cites a one percent increase in blood oxygen for people in that building
for a ten hour period as well as a surprising increase in productivity.
This has the outstanding benefit of reducing energy use in a home or
office, since fewer air changes are required for healthy air inside,
thus also reducing the heating and cooling loads on the place.
