Even if you don't happen to have that connection, there are plenty of other
opportunities to be of help to others, and plenty of others who for various
reasons are in more dire straits than any of us are likely to be. It helps
keep things in perspective, you may find opportunities to help by doing what
you usually do for pay, and some may even result in new professional
networking contacts (most of my most helpful contacts have been people I
originally met when I was on the other side of the need help/give help
exchange).
Just keep in mind that even after you have recovered from your current
situation (and you will), many of those people will probably still need the
help.
