The reason is simple: Saving as an older Word format in Word 97, does
not save in that native format, but as RTF (rich text).
Microsoft originally didn't include ANY backward compatibility in Word
97, presumably to "encourage" more people to "upgrade". The public
backlash caused them to recant... or at least appear to.

Try some other non-native format, such as WordPerfect or something.
If all else fails, pick up a copy of Word 6 and redo your document from
scratch. Better yet, pick up a copy of WordPerfect 7 and redo the
document from scratch, then ship Office 97 back to Redmond with a note
telling Billy where he can put it ;-)
