How do we (as a group/profession) account for having more than one version
of our resume? Books, consultants, and workshops on resume writing preach
about having more than one version to target specific jobs. And I'll bet
that most of us have more than one version. We all try to put our best foot
forward with cover letters and resumes, and I for one would find it
difficult to believe that no one has perhaps overstated at least one skill
or qualification once on a resume.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having different résumés for different applications. As writers, we should address the résumé to the audience and purpose. As long as the information is accurate, there's nothing wrong with this.

Maybe what would be a more interesting question to ask here would be, what constitutes an overstatement of a skill or qualification? If I say that I have some experience with a tool or technology that I've played with but never used in a production environment, is that an overstatement? (I'd say no.) If I claim to be an expert in using Frame+SGML but do not know how to modify an EDD, is that an overstatement? (I'd say yes.) Is listing skills with no indication of competency level a deceptive practice?
