Subject:Fw: The odds of finding work through job ads From:"Eileen Neumann" <eileenn -at- the-wire -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Mon, 17 Mar 2003 12:44:57 -0500
I'm wondering if the writers who are saying they've got most jobs through
contacts have all been in the business a long time. I suppose if I was a
contractor, and had worked for many clients over the years, my chances of
being hired through contacts would be higher than through ads. For myself,
I've had two positions as a tech writer, and don't have many contacts. Is my
chance of being hired through ads still lower than being hired through
networking? Personally, I think my chances are evenly divided between cold
calls and ads. In my situation, I think the chance of getting work through
my contacts is fairly slim. (Though i'd love to be proven wrong.)
I'm wondering too, if for new grads, this would also apply.
For the record, I got both my jobs through online ads - both on my local STC
site.
Cheers,
Eileen
