The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Andrew made a great point:
"How do you know its cryptic? I mean if you're not an advanced user with
extensive understanding of the technology/industry, how can you
effectively judge something as cryptic?"
This is something I have often encountered and had to learn myself (the
hard way, of course). Something that did not mean much to me (ttl, for
example), was as clear as SME to the SME. In fact, writing out the
acronym can occasionally make the meaning less clear. My audience knows
exactly what QoS is - but quality of service (especially without QoS
nearby or capitalization in place) makes them wonder if it is the
specific specification definition, or vaguer marketing verbiage.
