Subject:RE: How to handle when the scope changes? From:"Barb Einarsen" <barb -dot- einarsen -at- navtelcom -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Fri, 16 May 2003 14:25:23 -0400
Hi Kirsten,
You have done a good job of planning and pricing the project. I know you
took the low-end of your scale, but sometimes that is what you do to get
work.
Since the scope change does not increase the time frame (at least, not
by much), I recommend:
* stay with your rate for the 8-week duration (which you have already
agreed to do)
* consider accepting the low rate to finish the project if it extends by
no more than 1 week - and let them know you are doing it
* or, let them know now that starting week 9, the new rate applies. The
client can then decide to keep you on, or hire elsewhere.
I hire a lot of contractors, and if you told me that due to scope creep,
you want to increase your rate from week 6 to week 8 on an 8-week
project, I would not be impressed. However, if you accepted the scope
creep, and reminded me that the low-rate period expired after week 8, I
would be more open to negotiation.
Hope this helps,
