> So the question is this: is CTS a real problem or do people have other
> problems and are using CTS as a convenient excuse?
Yes, and yes.
Yes, CTS is a real problem. However, it doesn't effect everyone, and it doesn't
effect everyone the same way.
But, yes, it's also true that it's become engrained in the public consciousness.
Just like every sign of being tired is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or every
unpleasant event brings on Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, so every twinge in
the arm or hand is a case of CTS.
As an aside, I know several secretaries and executive assistants near retirement
age who reflect that, despite having had problems with it for years, they found
that nobody took it seriously until executives started having the condition, too.
People like to pick up the buzzwords, and saying that they have a "condition" or
a "syndrome" dramatizes their problem. But those who act this way do no service
to others who genuinely have a problem. They belittle the genuine problem by
their self-diagnoses, until people doubt that the real condition exists.
