TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Once upon a time, during the earlier years of the smiley, mood icons of a sort were widely used by subscribers to online services like Delphi, Compuserv, and Prodigy to convey to another how one felt about something. For instance:
<:::::jan reads the email with a big smile on his face:::::>
then
<:::::jumps for joy:::::>
knowing he'll get a series of
{{{{{really big hugs}}}}}
from his significant other when she returns home and hears the news.
Now-a-days though, most people find that a simple 8^) suffices, if anything at all. But since this really has nothing at all to do with technical writing (albeit a great deal to do with interpersonal relationships and other sorts of communication), I'll cut-out the chit-chat.
Btw, for the benefit of the others, would that be single or double squares or spaces that you're referring to below? <vbg>

I love the "mood" switch idea. Email communication issues concerning tone (or mood) have been around almost as long as email, so I think that it's time for a switch, er, uh, an indicator of mood. So what mood I am I projecting now?

My guess is that my mood icons will get turned into little squares or spaces. I meant to convey that I am happy, that I like the idea, and I gave a thumbs up.
