TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Catering for the "semi-literate"? Is that such a bad thing?
Before you all leap on this I'll quote from a recent presentation I heard
(at the UA Conference) by Prof. Geoffrey Pullum, who knows a bit about
grammar and stuff...
"Basically you are all good writers. You know what reads well and you know
how to write it."
With that in mind I think Apple have the correct approach. It scans just as
easily TO THE USERS OF THAT PRODUCT with or without the 'and'.
Gordon
P.S. Don't mention Strunk and White to Prof. Pullum as he may just suggest
that you burn your copy! (and with some merit as it happens, that was quite
a surprise to me as well)
