For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
This is my concern too. We have an STC competition called Touchstone,
sponsored by the six Northern California chapters. We work hard each
year to teach judges how to evaluate entries, and we conduct a
post-judging quality control process.
Our process and criteria are more flexible than what STC recommends.
The judging standards that STC promulgates for competitions seem
mechanistic and inflexible, though training and quality control could
probably make them work.
For certification, similarly, it will all depend on who's doing the
judging and who's designing and supervising the process.
For many years I ridiculed the idea of certifying technical
communicators, but enough people like the idea that something is going
to happen. We'll all learn from that, and perhaps it will evolve into
something worthwhile. I certainly hope so. ...RM
