Please, for the love of God, don't get me started on the Competition
judging... I'm still bitterly resentful about stuff from 15 years ago, much
less a few years ago. When it's done well, it's excellent but too often the
judges totally ignore the comments describing the piece.
But I'm hopeful this will be done well. I know a lot of very smart people
are involved.

This is my concern too. We have an STC competition called Touchstone,
sponsored by the six Northern California chapters. We work hard each
year to teach judges how to evaluate entries, and we conduct a
post-judging quality control process.
Our process and criteria are more flexible than what STC recommends.
The judging standards that STC promulgates for competitions seem
mechanistic and inflexible, though training and quality control could
probably make them work.
