I haven't seen anyone report this but I am not at all surprised by what
you have found.
It is a long while since I have worked with hidden text but I believe it
is the case you can tell Word to display hidden text but it remains
formatted as hidden text. You can create a style that has the hidden
attribute applied and then go to the style and remove it. That is a
different approach and may work.
