Possibly more depressing is the tendency in UK for advertisers to
start off at a reasonable rate to "test the water". You apply for the
contract but hear nothing. A few days to a week later, the same job is
re-advertised at a lower rate, and again a few days later at an even
lower rate, and again a few days later ...
I guess that we can't blame recruiters for trying to pay as little as
possible but it is depressing to see jobs that require years of
experience and in-depth knowledge of software tools going for just
over National Minimum Wage (about $9/hr) in some of these dutch
auctions.
